Mother’s Day 2026: An Open Letter to Ming

A FOUNDATION OF RESILIENCE

You are balancing work, family, and responsibility. You do not have time for clothing that holds you back. Your wardrobe should take care of you, not the other way around. Ming Wang was built on this exact reality. Our founder didn't just design clothing; she engineered a solution for a problem she lived every single day. She believed a woman could look sophisticated, put together, and confident—without sacrificing her time or comfort.

Today, we are sharing a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the uncompromising spirit that built this brand. Below is an open letter from Ming Wang's son, Steven, honoring the 40 years of necessity, stress, and unyielding integrity that shaped our foundation. Read the letter, and discover the resilient ethos that continues to drive every piece we create.

I. WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: The First Ming Wang Production Room

Mom,

When I think back to the beginning, I don’t remember a moment. I remember a feeling. You were always working.

I remember being a kid, going to daycare, and needing to take an afternoon nap… not in a quiet room, but in the middle of it all. There wasn’t anything comfortable about it. It was just what had to happen.

At the time, I didn’t think anything of it. I just thought that was normal.

Looking back now, I realize it wasn’t normal at all. It was necessity.

I remember the apartment in Queens. Two bedrooms, one bathroom, no central air. An AC unit in the window, loud enough that you had to raise your voice just to talk.

At first, we shared that space with another family. And when they moved out, what I thought would become my bedroom became something else entirely.

It became your first production room.

Knitting machines. Sewing machines. Constant noise. So loud that neighbors would complain.

At the time, it was just where I grew up. Now I see it for what it was.

You were building something out of nothing.

II FOR THE UNSTOPPABLE: The Origin of Our Ethos

As a kid, I didn’t fully understand what you were carrying. I knew you were stressed. I could feel that.

But I didn’t understand the kind of stress that comes from not knowing if you’ll have enough… not just for today, but for next week. Now I do.

There’s a difference between the stress we think we have, and the kind of stress you lived through. The kind that shapes you. Hardens you. Prepares you for anything that comes after.

You carried that without ever letting it become our burden.

What I remember most is this: You never asked for time for yourself. There was no “me time.” No breaks. No days off.

You worked, and you showed up. You made dinner almost every night. You drove us to school. You picked us up. You tried to do everything.

I didn’t understand it then, but now I see how many roles you were playing all at once.

You weren’t trying to build a brand. You were trying to build a life for us.

And I think that’s why the product works.

Not because of research. Not because of trends. But because it came from your life.

You believed that a woman could look sophisticated, put together, confident without it coming at the cost of her time. Because most women don’t have time.

They’re balancing work, family, responsibility. They don’t need more to manage.

Their wardrobe should take care of them.

You didn’t design clothing. You solved a problem you were living every single day.

III. AN EXTENSION OF FAMILY: What This Brand Truly Is

Growing up, I was a part of it. From a young age, I worked after school. Picking up fabric scraps. Putting beads on garments. Helping Dad at the cutting table.

And if I’m being honest… I didn’t want it. It was the last thing I thought I would do.

I didn’t appreciate it. I didn’t embrace it. But it taught me something I carry with me every day.

What it means to work.

What changed for me wasn’t sudden.

It was realizing what you and Dad built was special. And that it deserved to continue.

Today, I see it for what it is.

Not just a business, but something much bigger. An extension of our family.

People who have been with us for decades. People whose lives have been intertwined with ours.

This wasn’t just built with effort. It was built with relationships, with trust, with loyalty.

If there’s one thing that defines you, it’s this: You always did what was right.

Not what looked right. Not what was easy. What was right.

Your integrity was never in question. Your authenticity was never performative. It was just who you are.

And maybe the most remarkable part… You never needed recognition for any of it.

Even today, after 40 years, I don’t think you see yourself as a fashion designer.

You see yourself as a mother. A wife. Now a grandmother.

And everything else came after.

Your name is known by millions of women across the country. And yet, you would still be the last person to ever seek that recognition. You might even be embarrassed by it.

With Love, From Steven

For me, this was never about feeling like I owe you something. It’s something different.

I want to repay you.

Not because you expect it. But because you deserve it.

I want to give you the world even if I know you would never ask for it.

And if there’s one thing I hope, more than anything…

It’s simple.

I just hope you’re proud of me.

Thank you for everything you built.

And more importantly, for everything you gave.

Happy Mother’s Day.

— Steven
