What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you?

AAPI month reminds me to be proud of my heritage but also reminds me of how much has been accomplished by members of this community.

How has your heritage shaped the person you are today?

As an adoptee, the journey to connect with my heritage has been challenging but rewarding. While understanding my identity, I’ve been fortunate to have been adopted by an Asian-American family who encouraged me to deepen my appreciation for my heritage.

In college, I found a vibrant community of individuals who were a mixture of adoptees and first & second-generation. They were able to help me understand the different layers of cultural and heritage identity and created a space for me to choose how I wanted to interact with my heritage. Through their support, I’ve not only gained a deeper understanding of my roots but also discovered where I belong within the broader AAPI community.

What brings you joy about your heritage and culture?

The joy of my heritage and culture stems from its rich traditions, strong sense of community, and the diversity of experiences it encompasses. Celebrating cultural holidays and festivities with family and friends brings me immense happiness, as we share stories, traditions, and delicious food.

What part of your heritage are you most proud of and why?

I’m proud of the resilience and perseverance that is continually demonstrated throughout the community; by our own families and community leaders.

Could you tell us about what you're wearing?
